EDITORIAL

Welcome to LMS Journal No. 13 which is rather special. Early in March, Nelson Twells OBE, Hon. Secretary of the LMS Society, asked me if the members of the Society could supply all the articles for an entire edition. My response was to say 'Of course'. I should add that when the Society was founded in September 1963, the seven founders put the same question to Cyril Freezer then editor of the Railway Modeller. The result was that articles by Society memebers almost filled the June 1964 edition of the magazine; since then there have been a number of other LMS Society Specials but this is the first time the Society has filled an issue of LMS Journal.

Nelson's suggestion also provided a fitting home for David Jenkinson's last article. As many readers will know, David died on 27th April 2004 and I was privileged to be able to write an appreciation of his work and our deep friendship, which appeared in LMS Journal No. 8. This edition also contained the second part of his two-part article, 'LMS Carriage Liveries Revisited'. What readers do not know is that at the time of his death I had another coaching stock article from him that we both agreed would be held until 2005. Therefore, Nelson's suggested LMS Society Special edition proved timely and we felt that we should dedicate No. 13 to the memory of David Jenkinson, one of the founders of the LMS Society, who at the time of his death was its President. This dedication is in recognition of his immense contribution to the hobby which is without doubt second to none.

As editor of LMS Journal I would like to express my thanks to Society members whose contributions have made this edition possible. As is the nature of things, there are a number of articles from Society members that, for space reasons, have been held over and will appear in LMSJ No. 14, which will also contain the final part of David Jenkinson's article. I would like to acknowlege Mike Holland, Mike Peascod, Arnold Tortolla and Neslon Twells for contributions which you can enjoy in the next issue, which should appear during the spring of 2006. I would like to conclude by thanking all our readers for their support and positive comments over the past year.

As previously advised, two websites have been established. The LMS Society, www.lmssociety.org.uk hosts the LMS Journal and the Midland Railway Society, www.midlandrailwaysociety.org.uk hosts Midland Record. The two locomotive series, LMS Locomotive Profiles and Midland Engines, which are edited by David Hunt, form part of the respective sites.
