EDITORIAL

A few days before this edition closed for press, I received a phone call from Barry Lane, who told me that David Jenkinson had died earlier that day. Although the news was not entirely unexpected as we knew that his illness was serious, the speed with which it happened was an immense shock to all of his close friends. My immediate reaction was to suggest to the publisher that we recast the edition in order to accommodate an appreciation to David. His work and contribution to the railway hobby has been second to none, but I wondered what David's views would be.

Over the forty-one years that we had known each other we became very close friends and it was not difficult to gauge what his reaction would have been - 'If you insist on doing it, then make sure it's correct, you won't get a second chance.' Therefore we will recast LMS Journal No.8, due to be published in September 2004, and include a personal appreciation of the work of one of my closest friends.

Turning to this edition, I hope that readers will note the continued use of prime source material. In my previous editorial I drew readers' attention to the deluge of comment received following the publication of LMS Journal No.5 and wondered if this was a plot to divert my attention away from the task in hand, namely preparing LMS Journal and Midland Record for publication. However, I can confirm that the e-mail problems I encountered have been overcome, so your comments about the direction and content of LMS Journal are welcome.

There are a number of contributions from LMS Society members in this issue but, unfortunately, the Society's Spring meeting, which should provide an update on the proposed index for the first five editions, came too late for any information to appear in this issue.
