EDITORIAL

The publication of this edition enables me to say that, judging by your comments, we appear to have established a successful formula for LMS Journal. It is not easy; when the publisher and I came to select the material for this issue, we began to realise how difficult it will be to achieve an overall balance in a single edition. Previously I had suggested that we should be judged across several editions and, of course, this is true, but I would also like to ensure that some sort of balance is kept in each issue.

We believe that every edition of LMS Journal should contain material from each of the four operating divisions, Western, Midland, Central and Northern, with occasional features about the joint lines. We must also include information about the company's standard practices, which applied to the divisions as described above and ensure that we try to maintain a balanced range of subjects.

As the series unfolds, readers will be able to judge how successful we are in meeting these objectives, which brings me to the question of frequency of publication. We plan four editions per year. No.5 will be published in the summer (probably in July) with a further edition prior to the Warley Model Railway Exhibition in December, where we will have a stand devoted to both LMS Journal and Midland Record.

Many readers also take Midland Record, No. 18 of which should be published at Easter 2003 and No. 19 to coincide with or just before the Warley Exhibition mentioned above.

Finally, I can confirm that LMS Locomotive Profile No.4, The Princess Royals is in production and another Midland Engines, The Class 3 0-6-0T is almost complete.

Finally I would like to acknowledge the assistance received from members of The LMS Society, both as contributors and behind the scenes with research matters.
